“Black mold” usually refers to Stachybotrys chartarum, and it has a worse reputation than the evidence strictly supports — but that does not make it something to leave alone. The honest position: you cannot identify it by colour, plenty of harmless moulds are dark, some harmful ones are not, and any mould growing indoors means you have a water problem that will keep producing more.

Dozens of species present as dark patches. Stachybotrys is one, and it tends to appear on constantly wet cellulose materials — soaked drywall paper, saturated wood, backing behind tile.
Which is why finding it usually indicates sustained moisture rather than a one-off splash. The species matters far less than the fact that something has been wet long enough for anything to colonise it.
